Cinderella/It's A Hard Knock Life Allusion Partner: Kari

It's a hard-knock life for us! x2
'Stead of treated, We get tricked!
'Stead of kisses, We get kicked!
It's a hard-knock life!
Got no folks to speak of, so,
It's the hard-knock row we hoe
Cotton blankets, 'Stead a wool
Empty Bellies, 'Stead a full!
It's a hard-knock life!
Don't it feel like the wind is always howl'n?
Don't it seem like there's never any light?
Once a day, don't you wanna throw the towel in?
It's easier than putting up a fight.
No one's there when your dreams at night and creepy!
No one cares if you grow or if you shrink!
No one dries when your eyes get wet and weepy
From the crying you would think this place would sink!
Ohhhh!
Empty belly life! Rotten smelly life!
Full of sorrow life! No tomorrow life!
Santa Claus we never see
Santa Claus, what's that?
Who's he?
No one cares for you a smidge
When you’re in an orphanage!
It's the hard knock life
“You're gonna scrub this dump till it shines like the top of the Chrysler building!”
Yank the whiskers from her face
Jab her with a safety Pin
Make her drink a Mickey Finn
I love you Miss Hannigan
“Get to work! Scrub the floors! I said get to work!”
It's the hard-knock life for her x2
No one cares for you a smidge
When you’re in an orphanage
It's a hard-knock life! x3

The reason why “It’s A Hard Knock Life” is an allusion to Cinderella, is because Annie and his friends are forced to clean the orphanage, the same as how Cinderella was forced to clean Lady Tremaine’s palace. It also relates to the actual movie, “Annie,” as Annie turned from rags to riches, while Cinderella turned from just an ordinary girl to a beautiful princess. Miss Hannigan is an allusion to Lady Tremaine, since both of them are very cruel to both girls. But in the end they both have a happy ending, with Annie being adopted and Cinderella ending up with the Prince.

With the lyric “ ‘stead of treated, we get tricked, ‘stead of kisses, we get kicked,” it alludes to how her stepmother doesn’t exactly take care of her like the way her dad wants her to be treated. She’s usually just the maid, doing everything for them, and is always pushed around by her stepsisters.

With the lyric “Cotton blankets, ‘stead a wool, empty bellies, ‘stead a full it’s a hard knock life” it really alludes to that scene in the movie where Cinderella is forced to sleep in the “basement” without anything comfortable for her to sleep on. With the “empty bellies” lyric, it alludes to when the stepmother was having dinner with her daughters and made Cinderella only eat the leftovers if there was ever any, making it a “hard knock life” for her to live in.

With the lyric “It’s easier than putting up a fight,” it alludes to when Cinderella was about to go to the prince’s party, but her stepmother didn’t want her to go. She was told to clean the house for the night and was then stripped of her dress, but Cinderella didn’t do anything about it. She of course didn’t stay back, as her fairy godmother comes to the rescue and magically makes her a new dress and carriage with horses. That scene alludes to when Annie goes to Daddy Warbucks’ house even though Miss Hannigan had second thoughts about it.

With the lyric “You’re gonna scrub this dump till it shines like the top of the chrysler building,” it alludes to when Cinderella is told by her stepmother to clean the house. Lady Tremaine is a strict character, when it comes to Cinderella. She always makes her do all the chores for her and her daughters, and therefore alludes to the lyric.
