Rough Draft Allusion (the Trolls movie)

I’m known for being happy all the time.
Ask my friends and they would tell you the same thing.
But there’s actually much more to me than being happy.
Someone told me once,
That the world isn’t all cupcakes and rainbows.
Certain things can get to me,
Whether it’s happy or sad, I get affected.
I could be happy for no reason at all
and everyone would ask me if something exciting happened.
But sometimes, I would just lose myself.

There would be that one event
that could just knock my mood down.
It could last for a few minutes,
Or a few days.
But all I know is that in the end,
I would still get back up again.
There may have been a few people who doubted me,
But I ignore them,
Up until their doubts turn out to be true.
But until then, I will still believe in what I believe.

I’ve met many different types of people.
Some who were far more different than I was,
And some who were interested in almost all of the same things as me.
Those people are who make me who I am now,
Now matter how different or how same.
All of them have a meaning to me.
And sometimes,
The people who brought me down,
Helped bring me back to where I am now.
Either physically, or mentally.

My mistakes could be taken as a lesson,
Never to do them as I did.
It’s so much easier to have imperfections,
Than to be perfect.
And I know that I’m not the only one.
I will still continue to make more mistakes,
But with everyone that I love by my side to help me.
And in return I will do the same,
Because no one gets left behind.

Mean Girls/You Belong With Me Allusion Partner: Kari

"You Belong With Me"

You're on the phone with your girlfriend
She's upset, she's going off about something that you said
'Cause she doesn't get your humor like I do.

I'm in the room, it's a typical Tuesday night.
I'm listening to the kind of music she doesn't like.
And she'll never know your story like I do.

But she wears short skirts
I wear T-shirts
She's cheer captain
And I'm on the bleachers
Dreaming about the day when you wake up and find
That what you're looking for has been here the whole time.

If you could see
That I'm the one
Who understands you.
Been here all along.
So, why can't you see
You belong with me,
You belong with me.

Walk in the streets with you in your worn-out jeans
I can't help thinking this is how it ought to be.
Laughing on a park bench thinking to myself,
"Hey, isn't this easy?"

And you've got a smile
That could light up this whole town.
I haven't seen it in a while
Since she brought you down.

You say you're fine I know you better than that.
Hey, what you doing with a girl like that?

She wears high heels,
I wear sneakers.
She's cheer captain,
And I'm on the bleachers.
Dreaming about the day when you wake up and find
That what you're looking for has been here the whole time.

If you could see
That I'm the one
Who understands you,
Been here all along.
So, why can't you see
You belong with me.

Standing by and waiting at your backdoor.
All this time how could you not know, baby?
You belong with me,
You belong with me.

[Instrumental]

Oh, I remember you driving to my house
In the middle of the night.
I'm the one who makes you laugh
When you know you're 'bout to cry.
I know your favorite songs,
And you tell me about your dreams.
Think I know where you belong,
Think I know it's with me.

Can't you see
That I'm the one
Who understands you?
Been here all along.
So, why can't you see
You belong with me.

Standing by and waiting at your backdoor.
All this time how could you not know, baby?
You belong with me,
You belong with me.

You belong with me.

Have you ever thought just maybe
You belong with me?
You belong with me.

Taylor Swift’s song, “You Belong to Me” is an allusion of the popular movie, “Mean Girls” (2004). “You Belong to Me”, plot centers on an average girl pining after a boy who is in a relationship with the typical popular, girly girl which alludes to Mean Girl’s plot which is, about the protagonist who is also average longs to be with the guy of her dreams, who is with the popular mean girl.

Evidence:

For instance, “She wears high heels, I wear sneakers. She's cheer captain, And I'm on the bleachers” from “You Belong to Me”. This alludes to the the mean girl from “Mean Girls”, who not only literally wears high heels but has a very posh, girl aura on her. In addition, this lyric alludes to how the Mean Girl’s protagonist is bland in contrast by saying, “I’m on the bleachers,” because there is nothing special about being amongst the crowds.

Another example that the song alludes to the movie, “I'm the one who makes you laugh. When you know you're 'bout to cry. I know your favorite songs, And you tell me about your dreams. Think I know where you belong, Think I know it's with me”. This alludes to how the protagonist believes that the mean girl is not suited for him because she feels that she is the better option, since she bonds with him in the movie.

Lastly in the song it says, “And you've got a smile. That could light up this whole town”. This alludes to how the Mean Girl’s protagonist sees her crush’s beauty as otherwordly. In multiple scenes throughout the movie, the protagonist is seen in awestruck or happy at the sight of her crush. In conclusion, the song, “You Belong to Me”, is an allusion to “Mean Girls”.

Cinderella/It's A Hard Knock Life Allusion Partner: Kari

It's a hard-knock life for us! x2
'Stead of treated, We get tricked!
'Stead of kisses, We get kicked!
It's a hard-knock life!
Got no folks to speak of, so,
It's the hard-knock row we hoe
Cotton blankets, 'Stead a wool
Empty Bellies, 'Stead a full!
It's a hard-knock life!
Don't it feel like the wind is always howl'n?
Don't it seem like there's never any light?
Once a day, don't you wanna throw the towel in?
It's easier than putting up a fight.
No one's there when your dreams at night and creepy!
No one cares if you grow or if you shrink!
No one dries when your eyes get wet and weepy
From the crying you would think this place would sink!
Ohhhh!
Empty belly life! Rotten smelly life!
Full of sorrow life! No tomorrow life!
Santa Claus we never see
Santa Claus, what's that?
Who's he?
No one cares for you a smidge
When you’re in an orphanage!
It's the hard knock life
“You're gonna scrub this dump till it shines like the top of the Chrysler building!”
Yank the whiskers from her face
Jab her with a safety Pin
Make her drink a Mickey Finn
I love you Miss Hannigan
“Get to work! Scrub the floors! I said get to work!”
It's the hard-knock life for her x2
No one cares for you a smidge
When you’re in an orphanage
It's a hard-knock life! x3

The reason why “It’s A Hard Knock Life” is an allusion to Cinderella, is because Annie and his friends are forced to clean the orphanage, the same as how Cinderella was forced to clean Lady Tremaine’s palace. It also relates to the actual movie, “Annie,” as Annie turned from rags to riches, while Cinderella turned from just an ordinary girl to a beautiful princess. Miss Hannigan is an allusion to Lady Tremaine, since both of them are very cruel to both girls. But in the end they both have a happy ending, with Annie being adopted and Cinderella ending up with the Prince.

With the lyric “ ‘stead of treated, we get tricked, ‘stead of kisses, we get kicked,” it alludes to how her stepmother doesn’t exactly take care of her like the way her dad wants her to be treated. She’s usually just the maid, doing everything for them, and is always pushed around by her stepsisters.

With the lyric “Cotton blankets, ‘stead a wool, empty bellies, ‘stead a full it’s a hard knock life” it really alludes to that scene in the movie where Cinderella is forced to sleep in the “basement” without anything comfortable for her to sleep on. With the “empty bellies” lyric, it alludes to when the stepmother was having dinner with her daughters and made Cinderella only eat the leftovers if there was ever any, making it a “hard knock life” for her to live in.

With the lyric “It’s easier than putting up a fight,” it alludes to when Cinderella was about to go to the prince’s party, but her stepmother didn’t want her to go. She was told to clean the house for the night and was then stripped of her dress, but Cinderella didn’t do anything about it. She of course didn’t stay back, as her fairy godmother comes to the rescue and magically makes her a new dress and carriage with horses. That scene alludes to when Annie goes to Daddy Warbucks’ house even though Miss Hannigan had second thoughts about it.

With the lyric “You’re gonna scrub this dump till it shines like the top of the chrysler building,” it alludes to when Cinderella is told by her stepmother to clean the house. Lady Tremaine is a strict character, when it comes to Cinderella. She always makes her do all the chores for her and her daughters, and therefore alludes to the lyric.
